Why do I need a sitemap.xml file?
Spidering the web is a 'pull' technology which is great. By offering a way for webmasters to tell Google 'Hey, I have a new set of fresh pages, or I have updated many of my pages' can be done with the Google Sitemap Program. In contrast using Google Sitemaps is a 'push' technology. You let Google know when you have new content. It's nice to think that instead of Google using resources to snap a picture of the whole web, that individuals can just tell Google when their sites have new pages. This is done with a sitemap.xml file. |
