Why do I need
a sitemap.xml file?
Google is really great about
spidering the entire internet with their 'bots' and taking snap
shots of the web and recording what it sees. It is this information
that it uses to build its 'Search Engine Results Page'.
Spidering the web is a 'pull' technology
which is great. By offering a way for webmasters to tell Google
'Hey, I have a new set of fresh pages, or I have updated many of
my pages' can be done with the Google Sitemap Program. In contrast
using Google Sitemaps is a 'push' technology. You let Google know
when you have new content.
It's nice to think that instead of
Google using resources to snap a picture of the whole web, that
individuals can just tell Google when their sites have new pages.
This is done with a sitemap.xml file. |
