I use an .htaccess file already, do I still need to submit a sitemap.xml file to Google?


Yes. While knowing how to use a .htaccess file for redirections and applying custom 301s and 404s is great, it doesn't let Google know that you have new or updated content — untill the Google spider comes back around to check.
